My latest project: BETWEEN MACHINE & YOU is all about ROBOTIX / ENTERTAINMENT & INVENTIONS! Click the robot to go to BM&YOU website.
Next to our program at Detao Studio Esslinger, I was exited also to work with Detao Group, who is the parent company behind DETAO STUDIO ESSLINGer, on a different perspective and advised them while developing a comprehensive corporate identity.
We worked on branding, created guiding systems for the university, structured departments and institutes, developed website, exhibition plans and stationery.
The design process and product development has multiple steps ranging from reasearch, ideation, designing, over rapid prototyping, testing, and several further steps before a product is released to the market. Despite the advantage of amazing computing power and advanced software, a quick sketch is always gold. -> Peek into my sketchbooks.
With a small group of very energetic and optimistic people, we started our adventure in february 2012 to build a top class college for Strategic Design and Innovation in Shanghai China. Hartmut Esslinger, world famous Designer and my former teacher in Vienna, hired me right away after my degree to setup and run the studio, manage logistics and machinery import, get the team together, develop curriculum and eventually teach Design.
Over the next months we spent all our energy to change the empty concrete space into a breeding ground for young talents in China who want to become professionals in Design and Strategy. Situated on the campus of SIVA (Shanghai Institute of Visual Art) Detao Group, a private invested company, set it’s goal to bring foreign professionals from diverse fields to China and open studios for education in combination with hands on consulting projects.
Honored by the challenge and the fact that we were the first studio to be operational, we began our work.
Meanwhile the program occupies more then 1000m2 and spans over three floors, including a state of the art modelshop. It hosts as of fall 2016, freshmen, sophomore, junior and senior students.
Next to high quality speakers like Axel Thallemer, Alex Buck or Patricia Moore who flew in for one week special lectures, we could also win companies like Muji and Arcelik Beko to work with us on ideation workshops, which was a great chance for our students to get in touch with the industry. Convinced by our strategy, nine other studios followed our model, one year later and joined the education program. In the meantime the college received great feedback and support from the industry and government, being an outstanding and unique institution for design in china.
I have always been fascinated by perfectly finished models and functioning prototypes! The ingenuity and creative spirit that translates an idea on a piece of paper into a 3 dimensional object, which you then can touch and experience first hand is priceless.
As product design is all about process, prototyping is an essential element along the process and will determine the strenght and success of your project.
As part of my management responsibilities at Detao Studio Esslinger, I managed the setup of a worldclass rapid prototyping facillity in Shanghai / China.
We imported high quality machinery from Germany, setup a rich material storage and installed a high performance paint shop, including an extensive arsenal of waterbased paints from the automotive industry.
Q would love it, and so did our students and us!
Accepted 2006 at the university for applied arts Vienna, I studied Industrial Design and had the great chance to meet Hartmut Esslinger founder and former CEO of Frog Design to be my professor. Far beyond the university time we developed a great partnership and friendship, as he would hire me to manage a startup studio for Design Education in Shanghai, right after my degree in Vienna.
Checkout some highlights from my time at the university:
The awarded project “Here Robo Bugs” was my diploma, and shows my true passion in robotics, entertainment and education. “Train your own bug and let him compete with others!”
The algea-driven truck concept, “Chiron” was designed to use rail and road, and improve container logistics!
What seems like a hobby, involves patience, skill and a high level of precision! I enjoy the thrill of building something, and putting it to test right away.
